Baby's First 4th of July

My Munchkin is celebrating her first 4th of July this weekend. We'll do something simple to celebrate Independence Day and we'll remember the soldiers and their families. We'll pray for their safe return home.

Three Months - Tres Meses

It's been 3 months since I started this blog! Time flies and sometimes I want to grab on to a moment and savor it a little longer... but we all know that's not possible and the very reason why we celebrate: to remember and honor wonderful times and to mark highlights of our personal history. ¡Hace tres meses que empecé este blog! El tiempo vuela y hay veces en las que quiero tomar un momento y savorearlo un poco mas... pero no es posible. Es por eso que celebramos: para recordar y honrar tiempos maravillosos y para marcar los hitos en nuestra historia personal. Salud a mis lectores, amigos y familia. (Copa imaginaria de Champagne).

7 Months Bilingual Baby

By 7 months things change... my daughter has become super mobile, rolling back and forth on her tummy, reaching for anything within her grasp, trying out some pre crawling moves and... yelling. Her language development seems pretty much the same as a few weeks ago but she's discovered volume. She is into yelling instead of cooing. So there appeared a new concept in her life: NO, NO, NO. And she understands it clearly - in both languages -but couldn't care less. Her loudness is unpredictable and she seems entertained by it so what are we to do? Let her experiment and hope this is a fleeting stage in her development.

A los 7 meses las cosas cambian... mi hija esta super movediza: da vueltas para adenate y para atrás, trata de agarrar todo lo que esté cerca, practica movimientos para gatear y... grita. Su desarrollo lingüístico es muy similar al de unas semanas atrás pero ahora descubrió el volumen. Grita en vez de balbucear como bebé. Por consiguiente, apareció un nuevo concepto en su vida: NO, NO, NO. Lo entiende claramente - en los dos idiomas- pero no le importa para nada. Su volumen es impredecible y parece que la entretiene. Entonces, ¿qué hacemos? La dejamos experimentar y esperamos que sea una etapa pasajera de su desarrollo.

Mudarse

Mudarse es un gran cambio y los cambios ofrecen oportunidades. Me he mudado varias veces en mi vida pero esta vez es especial porque lo hago con mi familia. La casa que dejamos está llena de recuerdos del hogar que construímos con mi esposo y mi hija y la casa a donde vamos es una nueva aventura que emprendemos juntos.
Lo más abrumador hasta ahora es ver la cantidad de pertenencias que acumulamos y lo poco que realmente importan...

Moving is a big change and changes are opportunities. I've moved many times but this one is special because I'm doing it with my family. The house we are leaving is filled with memories built with my husband and daughter and the one we are moving to is a new adventure we are starting together.
The most overwhelming so far is to see the amount of belongings we accumulate and the little they really matter...

Stamford Library

What a treat! The Stamford Library, Main Branch is undergoing much needed renovations. Although the children's section in temporarily on the third floor, the staff is super helpful and they are excited (upcited, a dear little one I know would say) about the changes. Change is good.

¡Qué alegría! Están renovando la casa central de la biblioteca pública de Stamford. Aunque la sección de niños está ahora en el tercer piso, los empleados son muy amables y están muy entusiasmados con los cambios. Los cambios son buenos.

Nutrition / Nutrición

Since I was pregnant with my daughter, I started to learn more about nutrition because I wanted her to have the best diet available. I read The Unofficial Guide to Smart Nutrition by Ross Hume Hall , Superfoods by Dr S. Pratt and K Matthews, 8 weeks to Optimum Health by Dr Andrew Weil, Raising Baby Green by A. Greene and Baby Super Food by Ruth Yaron. And the basic advice that runs through them is surprisingly simple: eat mostly fresh vegetables and fruits (frozen as an alternative), eat local and organic produce (where available),eat in season.

Organic produce is not available everywhere and is usually more expensive so there's a list of "the dirty dozen" to avoid if possible and try to get organic.

Local produce is usually available as soon as the Farmer's Markets open, and in CT they are plentiful. Some have exclusively organic produce and it's usually local (always ask). You can even buy a season's share from a local farm.

On a personal note, my daughter seems to like all veggies she's tried so far. Full disclosure: except for the green peas I make; she eats the Gerber ones for my husband only.

Desde el embarazo empecé a leer sobre nutrición porque quiero que mi hija tenga la mejor alimentación posible. Leí The Unofficial Guide to Smart Nutrition por Ross Hume Hall , Superfoods por Dr S. Pratt and K Matthews, 8 weeks to Optimum Health por Dr Andrew Weil, Raising Baby Green por A. Greene y Baby Super Food por Ruth Yaron. El consejo que resuena en todos los libros es sorprendentemente simple: comer frutas y verduras frescas, comer productos locales y orgánicos (cunado sea posible), comer productos de estación.

Los productos orgánicos no están disponibles en todos lados y son generalmente más caros así que hay una lista de los doce más contaminados para evitar y consumir orgánicos.

Los productos locales se consiguen tan pronto abren los Farmer's Markets (mercados al aire libre donde las granjas locales venden sus productos) y en CT hay muchos. Incluso se puede comprar una participación anual en una granja de la zona para conseguir productos frescos y locales (preguntar siempre el orígen) todas las semanas.

En casa, a mi hija le gustan todas las verduras que ha probado hasta ahora. Confesión: excepto por las arvejas que le preparo yo; sólo come las Gerber cuando la alimenta mi esposo.
