Victorian Mysteries

I've been a fan of Anne Perry's books for a long time now and have read her two mystery series back to back: the Pitt and the Monk sets of novels. Here are two victorian mystery series that I cannot put down!


1- Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey Trilogy: Silent in the Grave; Silent in the Moor; Silent in the Sanctuary.


2- Tasha Alexander's Lady Emiliy's Mysteries: And Only to Deceive; A Poisoned Season; A Fatal Waltz.

Soy fanática de los libros de Anne Perry desde hace tiempo y leí dos de su series de misterio una detras de la otra: las novelas de Pitt y Monk. Estas son dos series nuevas (para mí) de misterio victoriano que no puedo dejar de leer!

I'm reading and re reading Buddhism for Mothers by Sarah Napthali and this mantra that the writer quotes from a master jumped at me. If I need to learn and practise anything as a mother, gentleness, patience and persistence say it all. And, by the way, the mantra seems to apply to every role I fulfill: mother, wife, friend, student, teacher, etc...

I've welcomed 2010 by plunging into the Mystery series by Anne Perry featuring the couple detectives Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. Set in Victorian England and spanning the lives of Mr and Mrs Pitt and their families, these stories weave intrigue with a detailed account of a bygone area of propriety and blatant social disparities. I suggest that you start with the older books of the series. You'll be hooked!

Raising Multilingual Children

I came across a gem of a book at the local library. The book is Raising Multilingual Children - Foreign Language Acquisition and Children. It answered most of the questions I had regarding the timing for the introduction of a third language into our bilingual household. It also provides a strategy or course of action to implement the new language as well as explanations of how this process takes place in the child's brains.

This read will spark even more questions but I'm hoping to build a reference corner soon in this blog with more resources for multicultural children, their families and community. If you have any link or tittle to recommend, please let me know.

Encontré esta joyita en la biblioteca pública. Este libro se llama Raising Multilingual Children - Foreign Language Acquisition and Children. Respondió la mayoria de las preguntas que tenía acerca del momento correcto para introducir un tercer idioma en nuestra familia bilingue. Además, el libro describe la estrategia o plan para implementar el nuevo idioma junto con la explicación del proceso que se lleva a cabo en la mente de los niños.

Esta lectura va a traer incluso más preguntas pero quiero construir pronto un sitio de referencia en este blog con mas recursos para niños multi culturales, sus familias y la comunidad. Si tienen algun enlace o título para recomendar me dejan saber.

Bookswim: Netflix for books

Renting books for a fee? Just like Netflix, they advertise. And I guess it makes eco sense to share books. But isn't that what libraries are for? I'm into mystery books and our library at Stamford is really well stocked and our librarians friendly and accommodating. So it doesn't seem to be the right service for me right now. Netflix is another story. We are members and I can't seem to watch movies and TV series fast enough. Just finished Trueblood's first (awesome) season!

The basic service at Bookswim called "Light Readers" is $19.98 a month and it allows you to have up to 3 books in circulation. And I should say that their stock is pretty impressive.

There are other options for the green minded readers out there. At paperbackswap.com, bookins.com and bookmooch.com you can exchange books paying only for postage.

¿Se alquilan libros por una cuota? Bookswim dice ser como Netflix. Y creo que compartir libros tiene eco sentido. Pero, ¿para qué son las bibliotecas? A mí me gustan los libros de detectives y misterio y nuestra biblioteca en Stamford tiene de todo y los empleados son amigables y serviciales. Este no es el servicio adecuado para mí en este momento. Netflix es otra cosa. Somos miembros y no podemos dejar de ver películas y series de TV. Recién terminamos de ver la primera temporada (buensíma) de Trueblood.

El servicio básico de Bookswim se llama "Light Readers" y cuesta $19.98 al mes y permite tener hasta 3 libros en circulación. Debo agragar que su inventario es impresionante.

Hay otras opciones para los eco lectores. En paperbackswap.com, bookins.com and bookmooch.com pueden canjear libros pagando sólo por el costo de envío.

Stamford Library

What a treat! The Stamford Library, Main Branch is undergoing much needed renovations. Although the children's section in temporarily on the third floor, the staff is super helpful and they are excited (upcited, a dear little one I know would say) about the changes. Change is good.

¡Qué alegría! Están renovando la casa central de la biblioteca pública de Stamford. Aunque la sección de niños está ahora en el tercer piso, los empleados son muy amables y están muy entusiasmados con los cambios. Los cambios son buenos.

Nutrition / Nutrición

Since I was pregnant with my daughter, I started to learn more about nutrition because I wanted her to have the best diet available. I read The Unofficial Guide to Smart Nutrition by Ross Hume Hall , Superfoods by Dr S. Pratt and K Matthews, 8 weeks to Optimum Health by Dr Andrew Weil, Raising Baby Green by A. Greene and Baby Super Food by Ruth Yaron. And the basic advice that runs through them is surprisingly simple: eat mostly fresh vegetables and fruits (frozen as an alternative), eat local and organic produce (where available),eat in season.

Organic produce is not available everywhere and is usually more expensive so there's a list of "the dirty dozen" to avoid if possible and try to get organic.

Local produce is usually available as soon as the Farmer's Markets open, and in CT they are plentiful. Some have exclusively organic produce and it's usually local (always ask). You can even buy a season's share from a local farm.

On a personal note, my daughter seems to like all veggies she's tried so far. Full disclosure: except for the green peas I make; she eats the Gerber ones for my husband only.

En casa, a mi hija le gustan todas las verduras que ha probado hasta ahora. Confesión: excepto por las arvejas que le preparo yo; sólo come las Gerber cuando la alimenta mi esposo.

Un árbol / One Tree

Innovative Kids tiene la serie Green Start, entre ellos, One Tree / Un árbol escrito por Leslie Bockol e ilustrado por Julian Phillips. Este lindo libro se lo regalamos a mi hija el fin de semana cuando salimos de paseo a la librería. Nos pareció adorable el tema del ciclo de vida de los árboles y apropiado para celebrar el mes de la tierra con muestra bebé.
Esta serie esta hecha con un 98% de materiales reciclados e impresa con tinta a base de soja. En la última página hay más información acerca de la importancia de los árboles y cómo preservarlos.

Innovative Kids has the series Green Star. One of the books of the series is One Tree, written by Leslie Bockol and illustrated by Julian Phillips. We gave this book to our daughter on the weekend when we were on a family trip to the bookstore. We love the topic of the tree's life cycle and we find it very appropriate to celebrate Earth Month with our baby.

This series is made with 98% postconsumer recycled materials and printed with soy - based ink. On the last page there's information on the importance of trees and how to care for them.
