Teavana is a jewel of a store that sells various kinds of teas with enticing aromas at the Westchester Mall. The paraphernalia to savour the teas is just as fanciful.

The teas look, smell and taste heavenly. These are just of the delectable names of their tea selections:

Español colomboargentino / Colombian - Argentine Spanish

Nuestra familia bilingüe se compone de padres cuya lengua madre es el español y su segunda lengua es el inglés.

En cuanto al Español, muchas personas que no lo hablan, piensan que todos los países del continente americano que hablan español son bastante homogeneos en su cultura y en su lenguaje. Pero la verdad es que somos países unidos por un idioma no tan común a todos y también con grandes diferencias culturales. España y los países de América que hablan español comparten una gramática, una sintáxis y una cierta cantidad de vocablos que los une lo suficientemente como para designarlos a todos como hispanohablantes. Sin embargo, como todos los hispanohablantes que he conocido en Estados Unidos saben, las diferecias léxicas son tantas que no siempre la comunicación en español es exitosa. En nuestra casa, las diferencias en el vocabulario entre Colombia (Papá) y Argentina (Mamá) fueron evidentes desde el comienzo y motivo de varios desentendidos. ¿El closet o el placard? ¿El arequipe o el dulce de leche? ¿Ahorita o en un rato?

Debo confesar que tengo una afinidad por el modo de hablar de los colombianos; me encanta su uso del vocabulario y su pronunciación del español menos brusca. A mis oídos, el español Argentino o Rioplatense suena mas "fuerte", en especial con los sonidos de "yo" "yogurt" "yo-yo" tan característicos de esa región de América del Sur.

¿Como hablará nuestra hija el español? ¿Será una mezcla de ambos? ¿O hablará ese odioso español "neutro"? Yo prefiero que ella se apropie un SÓLO español con todas sus idiosincracias que lo hacen interesante y vivo.

Our bilingual family is made up of parents whose mother tongue is Spanish and their second language is English.
As regards Spanish, many non Spanish speakers think that all Spanish speaking countries in the American Continent are pretty much homogenous in their culture and language. But the truth is that we are countries united by a language not so common to all and with huge cultural differences. Spain and the Spanish speaking countries in America share grammar, syntax and a fair amount of vocabulary that brings them together just so that we can all be described as Spanish speakers. However, as every Spanish Speaker I've met in the US knows, the lexical differences are so many that communication among Spanish Speakers themselves is not always successful. In our home, vocabulary differences between Colombia (Dad) and Argentina (Mom) were evident from the start and caused a great deal of misunderstandings. Closet or Placard? (Closet). Arequipe o dulce de leche? (Caramel). Ahorita o en un rato? (In a few).
I must confess I have an affinity for the Colombian way of speaking. I adore their use of words and lighter Spanish pronunciation. To my ears, Spanish from Argentina or from the region of Rio de la Plata sounds "stronger", especially in words such as "yo" "yogurt" "yo-yo" whose initial consonant sound is characteristic of the region.
How is our daughter's Spanish going to sound like? Will it be a mixture of both? Or will she speak that horrible Spanish described as "neutral"? I prefer that she speaks only ONE Spanish with all its idiosyncrasies that make language interesting and alive.

Caetano Veloso

Caetano Velosos' songs are a gift to the soul. This fabulous singer / songwriter/ musician / philosopher/ poet is a favorite of three generations of women in my family: my Mom, my daughter and myself. My baby's first song was Caetano's version of Cucurrucucu Paloma! I hope you all get to hear the magic melodies he weaves for us mortals.

Las canciones de Caetano Veloso son un regalo para el alma. Este fabuloso cantante/ compositor / músico / filósofo / poeta es el preferido de tres generaciones de mujeres en mi familia: mi mamá, mi hija y yo. La primer canción de mi bebé fue la versión de Caetano de Cucurrucucú Paloma. Espero que todos uds. escuchen las mágicas melodias que teje para nosotros los mortales.

Recetas de familia: Chichi's chimichurri

En esta entrega de las Recetas de familia les paso un clásico de la cocina argentina para acompañar, generalmente los chorizos (choripanes), o cualquier carne.

Chimichurri Chichi

En una procesadora picar hasta consistencia deseada:

- 1 taza de aceite de oliva extra vírgen

- jugo de medio limón

- 1 ramillete de perejil italiano pequeño- sólo las hojas

- 3 dientes de ajo

- 1/4 cebolla roja

- 1 cucharadita de pimienta roja picada

- sal y pimienta a gusto

Esta es una receta que gustó muchísimo en un asado que hicimos el fin de semana con amigos. Lo importante es que ajusten los ingredientes a su preferencias - más picante, con más o menos ajo y que hagan el doble de lo que pensaban preparar.

Family Recipes: Chichi's Chimichurri

In this posting of Family Recipes let me share with you a classic from the Argentine cuisine, generally used to accompany sausages (choripanes), but good for any kind of meat.

Chichi's Chimichurri

In a food processor chop until desired consistency:

- 1 cup of EVOO

- juice of half a lemon

- 1 small bunch of flat leaf parsley - leaves only

- 3 garlic cloves

- 1/4 red onion

- 1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes

- salt and pepper to taste

My friends loved the recipe when they tasted it this past weekend. The important thing is to adjust the recipe to your taste - spicier, more or less garlic and to make a double batch!

Guayaquil, Ecuador

Postcards is a recurrent entry where people tell me about their city and what it means to them in images and a few words so that we can enjoy them through their eyes and thoughts. This post was written by my brother, Cristian Cattaneo, about Guayaquil in Ecuador, where he lives with his wife Alexandra Saltos.

This photo was taken from the tallest building in Guayaquil called the Banker's Club and where our wedding reception was held. You can see the River Guayas, the "malecon" and part of the city center (January 2008).

Esta otra foto está sacada desde el malecón, sobre el río Guayas y el barco se llama Buque escuela Guayas. Lo que se ve atrás en la foto es el cerro Santa Ana con el faro en la punta que es un lugar bien turístico y adonde empezó al ciudad de Guayaquil (enero de 2007).

This other photo was taken from the "malecon" by the River Guayas and the boat's name is Buque escuela Guayas. In the background you can see St Ana's Hill with it's lighthouse at the top. This is a very touristic site and where Guayaquil city started (January 2007).

La verdad es que nunca me imaginé que iba a vivir el Guayaquil y menos conocer Ecuador. El río Guayas pasa cerca de nuestra casa. Nosostro vivimos cerca de donde tome las fotos a unos 10 minutos en auto. Hay un aspecto similar entre Guayaquil, Ecuador y Rosario, mi ciudad natal en Argentina: los ríos que las bordean concentran una gran parte de la actividad de ambas ciudades.

The truth is that I never imagined I was going to live in Guayaquil or get to know Ecuador. The Guayas River is close to our home. We live close to where the photos were taken, about 10 minutes away by car. There is a similarity between Guayaquil, Ecuador, and Rosario, Argentina, my hometown: the rivers that go by them are a big part of the citys' lives.

Clases de conversación en inglés en la biblioteca de Stamford

La biblioteca de Stamford ofrece una clase de conversacion en ingles que se llama "Let's Talk" en Main Branch (miércoles a las 6.30) y en South End Branch (jueves a las 6.30). Sólo pueden llegar a la clase en el día y hora correcto, no hace falta registrarse. Y si necesitan ir con sus niños, hay un programa para niños de 5 a 10 años que corre paralelamente a la clase de los adultos.

English Conversation group at the Stamford Library

The Ferguson Library at Stamford offers a fantastic "Let's Talk" English conversation group at the Main Branch (Wednesdays at 6.30 pm)and at South End Branch (Thursdays 6.30 pm). The sessions are drop -in, no registration required. And if you need to bring your child, they have a program for kids ages 5 to 10 parallel to the adults.
