Tomemos un café

The greatest pastime of my country seems to be drinking coffee with friends. You can order "cafe" and you'll get a small black espresso, or "cortado" and you'll get the espresso with a drop of steamed milk (mini cappuccino) or a "lagrima" and you'll get steamed milk and a splash of espresso (closer to a mini latte).
If you want a larger cup you have to request a "doble". And that is still half of what you get in a grande Starbucks cup!
...

Tea is Served

Among the many gifts that the end of the year has bestowed upon my family, the most mundane of all turned out to be special.

My husband, knowing my interest in tea, bought me a Breville electric kettle. His thoughtful gift has allowed us to switch to tea more often (and rely less on coffee) and to explore all kinds of flavourful concoctions brewed to perfection thanks to the kettle's settings for green, white, oolong or black tea.

Brewing tea is not exactly my hobby but I enjoy trying out new kinds and sharing it with friends. There's something about drinking tea that is comforting and, if you add delicious and healthy, it sounds like a positive start for 2010.

...

Food and Wine Pairing

I found a simple to use website for those of us who want to make a good meal taste even better. Appropriate pairings of wine and food really do make a difference. Yet, and the website agrees, you should go ahead and drink what you like.

Salud!

...

Drinking Mate is basically a social activity in Argentina, or at least, that's how I enjoy it the most. But a lot of people enjoy it by themselves just like a cup of coffee in the morning.
Origin
Yerba Mate grows in the northeast region of Argentina, Paraguay and the South of Brazil. The Guarani Indians used to drink this herb by the time the Spanish arrived in America. The Jesuit missions were the first to grow it systematically.
In the US
Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is becoming known in the US in the natural circles. Some supermarket chains like Whole Foods import two brands of mate - Guayaki (organic, shade grown) and Eco. Although I lost the habit of drinking mate a few years ago, once and again I drink a couple while I straighten out the house or cook dinner. Many of the most popular brands form South America are available in the Hispanic markets in Stamford CT, in Queens, NY and in New Jersey (tri state area) and also online (everything is online!).
Effects and Benefits
In my experience, drinking mate gives me a mild to high buzz. Some experts (not all) say that this buzz is due to a substance similar to caffeine but not as harmful. They also say that the beverage contains vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids.
Preparation
Each region and family has their preferences when it comes to preparing mate. My Grandfather made them sweet with sugar and dried orange peel (No sugar in mine). I recently began to add unorthodox herbs such as Echinacea in the winter.

Mate is an acquired taste and I hope you try it someday.
