Best Children's Fictional Character

El mejor personaje ficticio infantil de acuerdo con la votación fue Shrek. Yo tengo mi corazoncito con el Chavo del 8 pero admito que Shreck es gracioso. Ambos son figuras frágiles emocionalemnte que deben enfrentar dificultades en la vida - no son los protagonistas que tienen todo a su favor. Deben usar el ingenio para conseguir lo que quieren, o en el caso del Chavo, para satisfacer la necesidad básica del alimento. Pero creo que la clave del éxito y de la fuerza de ambos personajes esta en la amistad. Son los amigos quienes los ayudan, los aconsejan y estan presentes en las buenas y en las malas. Que linda lección para que aprendan los niños.

Shrek was the best children's fictional character according to the voters. My heart was set on Chavo del 8 but I have to admit that Shrek is fun. They are both emotionally fragile characters that have to face difficult situations in life; they are not the stars that have everything going for them. They have to be resourceful to get what they want out of life, or in Chavo's case, to satisfy his basic need of food. But I think that the key to both character's success and strength is their friends. It's their friends who help them, advice them and are there through thick and thin. What a great lesson for children to learn.

Esta imagen feliz me recuerda a los cumpleaños de la infancia. Laura Ferreyra es la genial repostera que crea estos alfajorcitos de maicena artesanales rellenos de dulce de leche. Son suaves y a la vez se deshacen y tienen ese aroama a limón tan delicioso... Ella los vende en varios restaurantes y panaderias de la zona y hace pedidos especiales para fiestas y reuniones. ¡Son una linda tradición para continuar en los cumpleaños de mi hija!

Handmade Cornstarch Delights

This happy image reminds me of childhood birthday parties. Laura Ferreyra is the brilliant baker that creates these handmade cornstarch "alfajorcitos" filled with caramel. They are smooth and crumbly and lemony and Oh so good! She sells to various restaurants and bakeries in the area and makes special orders for parties and celebrations. They are a great tradition to continue in my daughter's birthday parties.

Dr Weil

Dr Andrew Weil has been my health care referent for many years now. I first discovered him when I was getting regular ear infections and, instead of antibiotics, I decided to take a more "natural" approach. By reading about Integrative Medicine and Dr Weil, I took his suggestion of strengthening the immune system to fight all kinds of infections and it worked like magic (or should I say like medicine?). El Dr Andrew Weil es mi referente de salud desde hace muchos años. Bilingual Baby / Bebe bilingüe

This blog was inspired by my daughter and our family's bilingual makeup. At the beginning, I focused on translating posts and that is one way of "dealing" with both languages. As days go by, I feel more inclined to read and write specifically about language development and language acquisition in bilingual speakers. So here goes my first entry on bilingualism at home, in our extended family, friends and our community at large.

Although I'm not an expert in the subject, I've read a fair amount at school and on my own for a number of reasons. First, because I'm bilingual myself having attended a bilingual school since I was 5 years old. Second, because I have a background in teaching English as a Second Language and a Degree in Translation. Third (and lately), because my daughter was born to a Spanish speaking household in an English speaking country.

There's more. Most of the people I know are bilingual or have bilingual children and families (in different countries and hemispheres). So I feel that there's much to explore and a wealth of tales to tell.

I invite you to follow my daughter's language acquisition process and our attempts as parents to help her along her bilingual linguistic development.

Este blog fue inspirado por mi hija y nuestra familia bilingüe. Al comienzo, me concentré en traducir los artículos y esa es una forma de relacionarse con los dos idomas. Conforme va pasando el tiempo, siento más inclinación a leer y escribir sobre el desarrollo del lenguaje y la adquisición del lenguaje en hablantes bilingües. Esta es la primer entrada acerca del bilingüismo en casa, en nuestra familia y amigos y en la comunidad donde vivimos.

Aunque no soy uan experta en el tema, he leido bastante por diferentes razones. Primero, porque yo soy bilingüe y asistí a una escuela bilingüe desde los 5 años. Segundo, por mi experiencia como Profesora de Inglés como segunda lengua y por mis estudios de Traductora. Tercero (y recientemente), porque mi hija nació en una familia que habla español en un país de habla inglés.

Y hay más. La mayoría de la gente que conozco es bilingüe o tiene una familia bilingüe (en diferentes paises y hemisferios). Así es que creo que hay mucho material para explorar y un millón de historias para contar.

Los invito a que sigan el proceso de adquisición del lenguaje de mi hija y nuestros esfuerzos como padres para ayudarla en su desarrollo lingüístico bilingüe.

Tried and True: Unclogging Drains

This "recipe" for unclogging the drain has been tired by yours truly in all three sinks and bathtub at home. It's worked every time, it costs cents and it's good for the environment.

I got it at http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/11/th_tip_uncloggi.php (Tree Hugger). This mega blog keeps coming up with common sense tips to green every aspect of our lives.

Ingredients:

- 1 cup baking soda

- 1 cup distilled white vinegar

- 1 kettle boiling water

Instructions:

Pour the baking soda on top of drain. Pour vinegar on top. As they mix, it will fizz. Leave 10 minutes and pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain. If the drain is badly clogged you might need to repeat this procedure a couple of times. Do not wait till your drains are clog, this recipe can be used as a preemptive measure.

Funciona: Destapando Cañerías

Esta receta para destapar cañerias fue probada por quien les escribe en las tres lavabos de la casa y en la bañera. Funciona siempre, cuesta centavos y es bueno para el medioambiente.

Este mega blog actualiza continuamente artículos con sentido común para hacer más "verde" todos los aspectos de nuestra vida.

Ingredientes:

1 taza de bicarbonato de soda

1 taza de vinagre blanco destilado

1 pava de agua hirviendo

Instrucciones:

Vertir el bicarbonato de soda sobre el drenje. Vertir el vinagre sobre el drenaje. Cuando se mezclen, van a hacer espuma. Dejarlo actuar 10 minutos y vertir la pava de agua hirviendo. Si las cañerías están muy tapadas tendrán que repetir el procedimiento más de una vez. No esperen a que se tapen las cañerías, esta receta puede usarse como medida de prevención.
