CPR Certification

Two weeks ago, my husband and I took an Infant and Child CPR Course at the Red Cross of Stamford redcross.org. It consisted of a video section with commentary by the instructor, a practical section where we practised CPR on dolls and finally a test section to become certified.

Since we are new parents, this class was a must for us but I also recommend it to everyone who happens to be around children.

The most sobering piece of information we learnt was that for every minute that a child(or adult) is not breathing, 10% of her brain function can be compromised. The average response of the Energency Services (EMS) in CT is 5 minutes . You do the math.

I know that we are all scrunched by the economic situation but this is a valuable investment. The course costs $60 and certification is valid for one year. There are refresher courses available as well.

Liliana.

This is a regular post that I'd like to share with you. These are family recipes that I grew on and/or that I have adquired through the years and now belong to my repertoire. The first recipe to publish here is an original delicacy from one of the best cooks I know: my Mom, Liliana Del Teglia. I chose to present and translate recipes because they are a challenge in Spanish particularly since in the various latinamerican countires culinary terms are a bit confusing.

Carrot Terrine

1 kg of boiled carrots

1 chopped onion sauteed in butter

100 g boiled ham chopped

1 cup of breadcrumbs

1 cup of shredded parmesan cheese

4 eggs

salt, pepper, a pinch of ginger and a bit of mixed herbs

Instructions

Put all ingredients in food procesor. After well processed, place in loaf or bundt pan that has been buttered and sprinkled with breadcrumbs. Bake in the oven in a water bath until knife comes out clean when inserted in the middle (approx 1 hour). Take out of oven, let it cool and take out of pan.

You can eat it cold with mayonnaise or warm with white sauce, for example. I hope you like it. Liliana.

Eco Technology / Eco tecnología

Today is my grand debut to online blogging. My wife asked me to contribute to her blog. Since we are celebrating Earth’s Month and my area of expertise is Information Technology, I will be giving you some tips on how to green your computer use.

1. Maximize power saving: Set your computer to enter standby or hibernation after 15 minutes of inactivity. Set your monitors to enter sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. On laptops make sure you use this setting in the AC power profile not just the battery power profile.

2. Consider investing in a flat panel: The monitor is the biggest consumer of energy, especially if it is an older monitor - the kind you need two people to lift. Flat panels consume half the power of older monitors! If you invest in a new monitor don’t forget to take your old monitor to the recycling center for proper disposal.

3. Turn it off: When not working on your computer turn the monitor off. If not using the computer overnight shut it down instead of letting it go into sleep mode. Also, if you have a laptop you can set up the lid setting to go into hibernate when you close it.

4. Do not use a screensaver: Many people think that by using a screensaver you are saving energy. This is not so. By using a screensaver your computer is using energy so set your screensaver setting to none.

5. Stop printing everything: Many times when you are looking for driving directions to a place the first thing you do is print them. GoogleMaps or YahooMaps gives you an option to email the directions to your personal email address or your cell phone. My suggestion is to ask yourself this question: Do I really need the print out or is there another way for me to make the document portable? And remember to turn the printer off when you are not using it.

I came across this next generation of reusable water bottles last year when I was researching hiking equipment with my husband.

The company The Water Geeks offers a variety of reusable BPA free water bottles with built in filters. The Filtered Sports Bottle (shown here $18) has a filter ($15 for two) that is good for 200 refills of fresh tap water. There's also the Micron Filter Hiking Bottle ($39.99) with a filter ($24.99) that purifies up to 200 gallons of water.

At thewatergeeks.com there's plenty of information regaring the benefits of filtered water and the very real drinking water crisis in the planet. A portion of the profit goes to the Tap Project by UNICEF. Learn more!

We gave this book to our daughter on the weekend when we were on a family trip to the bookstore. We love the topic of the tree's life cycle and we find it very appropriate to celebrate Earth Month with our baby.

This series is made with 98% postconsumer recycled materials and printed with soy - based ink. On the last page there's information on the importance of trees and how to care for them.

Go Green ... Go Red

This is just one of the delectable images that remind me of the simple beauty of nature. It was taken by the multifaceted artist Berenice Favario who is a childhood friend of mine. Expect to see quite a few of her artistic contributions along the way.

Her eco resolution was to grow her own vegetables.
