In Season: Summer

In Season by Sarah Raven is a great reference to consult every week as you jot down your grocery list. The recipes are arranged by season so that it's easy to cook with the best ingredients available.
And , if you happen to buy at a Farmer's Market with local organic produce then you hit the jackpot.

Here are some of the Summer vegetables and fruits to enjoy before this season is over:

corn, watermelon, peas, eggplant, apricots, blueberries, zucchini, peaches, tomatoes, cherries (form Food Network).

I'll post the fall seasonal vegetables and fruit chart in a few weeks.

9 Months: Bilingual Baby Breakthrough

Our daughter responds with a wave to both Bye, Bye and Chau, Chau so I'm assuming that she has associated both words (sounds) with the same action. This seems to be the first sign that she's incorporating both languages at the same time. We'll keep watching how her language acquisition evolves.
I wanted to keep you all updated!

Art Contributor: Soft Summer Breeze

Here are some wonderful drawings by Berenice Favario done while living in Barcelona. These naive miniatures are a hybrid technique of pastels and digital retouching. Charming!

Ajiaco colombiano

This weekend I prepared my first Ajiaco. It is a typical dish of colombian cuisine: a soup with chicken, many kinds of potato, corn and huascas (herb). You can buy the bag with all the ingredients at Grade A superarkets in Stamford.
It's served with creme fraiche, capers, avocado and the ubiquitous white rice on the side. Amazing!

And guess who had her first Ajiaco on Sunday?

9 Month Bilingual Baby

Our daughter crawls! One afternoon, soon after turning 9 months she took off in search of the coveted remote control. She had been practising the rocking on all fours and that day it clicked in her head that she could actually move forward. The cutest thing is that she hasn't figured out (yet) that she can follow us or move away from us.

As if this milestone was not enough, she also cut her first two teeth. This has brought about a slight disturbance in the wonderful alnighters she has pulled since she was 2 and 1/2 months old. We have been very spoiled!
And to my utter delight, I am pretty sure she says "Mama". I know many (Papa) are not convinced she actually refers to me but she clearly says it when she cries and that seems to be an indication that she wants her Mamamamamaaaaaa.

What an eventful month and a good reminder to be thankful for the many blessings.

9 meses - Bebe Bilingüe

Nuestra hija aprendió a gatear.

Food and Wine Pairing

I found a simple to use website for those of us who want to make a good meal taste even better. Appropriate pairings of wine and food really do make a difference. Yet, and the website agrees, you should go ahead and drink what you like.

Salud!

A Pocket Naturalist Guide

Our family bought the Connecticut Birds and New England Trees and Wildflowers Pocket Guides this past spring with the intention of teaching the little one about her surroundings. Since our baby is 9 months old, the adults seem get the educational part of it while the baby is content with being outside "exploring" with us.
We live in Stamford, close to Downtown, yet we have been able to see quite a few of the birds mentioned in the guide: Sparrows, Indigo Bunting, Northern Cardinal and Robins (*). At least we think we've identified those so far. The guides bring colorful pictures of the birds and their measurements. I highly recommend this inexpensive (Guide is $5.95) activity to share with kids of all ages.

(*) This is a link to Wikipedia for the bird and if you scroll down you can listen to a recording of the bird's song. My girl loved it!
