10 Month Bilingual Baby

Una de cal y una de arena.

El horario de la siesta y el de la noche se acomodaron como por arte de magia. Cuando su cabecita toca el colchón, casi siempre cae rendida. Creo que esto de debe a que está gateando mucho durante el día y practica pararse cada dos por tres.
Pero aprendió al mismo tiempo una sutileza impresionante: a hacer como que llora. Descubrió que cuando llora mamá se materializa a su lado y le resuelve sus inconvenientes. Entonces la investigadora esta experimentando con la hipótesis para probar como funciona en todas las situaciones: cuando no alcanza un juguete, cuando le digo que "no, no, no", cuando quiere el tetero o cuando no lo quiere. Y apenas consigue lo que deseaba, me sonríe encantadora como diciendo "eso era lo que quería, ya podés retirarte".

Plus and Minus.

Nap and bed time have magically fall into place. As soon as I put her down, she almost always falls asleep. I think this is due to her frantic crawling and constant practise of pulling herself up holding on to furniture.

But to balance things out, she has acquired an incredible subtlety: she pretends she's crying?! She understands that Mom materializes every time she cries and solves her problems. So the scientist in her decided to experiment with the hypotesis to see if it applies to all situations: when she cannot reach for a toy, when I say "no", when she wants her bottle or when she doesn't. And as soon as she gets what she wants, she flashes a charming smile saying " this is exactly what I wanted; you can go now."

Window of Opportunity /t/

Our Baby has been exploring the /t/ sound for a few days. I jumped to the opportunity and started tossing words with that sound for her to repeat. The first word I said to her was "turtle" and she tried it out and managed an impressive (for Mom) likeness of the word. This event triggered a dance of joy around her bedroom and a frenzie of requests "say tale", "say tia", "say tetero". And then I decided not to mix the two sounds /t/ in Spanish and English since they are different. But I still pressed on with turtle, which ended with a clear "ahhhhhhhh" (calm down Mom and go play or do something).

Needless to say, "turtle" has become Baby's latest gig for Mom and Dad to show off.

Nuestra Bebé está explorando el sonido /t/ desde hace unos días. Aproveché la oportunidad y empecé a tirarle palabras con ese sonido para que las repitiera. La primer palabra que le dije fue "turtle" (tortuga) y ella la repitió con una exactitud impresionante (para Mamá). A este acontecimiento lo celebramos con un baile de alegría por toda la habitación y una desenfrenada lista de pedidos "decí tale", "decí tía", "decí tetero". Luego decidí no mezclar los dos sonidos /t/ en español y en inglés ya que son diferentes. Pero continué pidiendo que diga turtle (tortuga), lo que terminó en un claro "ahhhhhhhhhh" (Mamá, calmate y andá a jugar o algo).

No hace falta decir que "turtle" se ha convertido en el nuevo talento de nuestra hija que mostramos orgullosos a los que quieran (o no ) oirlo.

Best cooking tip ever: use San Marzano tomatoes for your sauces. I could not find them in my local supermarket until Cento came up with a line of San Marzano. These tomatoes are from a region in Italy close to Mount Vesuvius, famous for it's rich soil.
Stock up if you see them at your supermarket because they go fast!

El mejor consejo de cocina que me han dado: usen tomates San Marzano para las salsas. No podía encontrarlos en mi supermercado hasta que la compañía Cento apareció en mi mercado con su línea de San Marzano. Estos tomates provienen de una región de Italia cerca del Monte Vesubio que es famoso por su exepcional suelo.
¡Compren varios si los ven en su mercado porque desaparecen enseguida!

Bilingual Readers is a charming site with resources ranging from books to information regarding bilinguism. There's children's books in English and Spanish to choose from, which means going beyond the small shelf of books in Spanish at the local bookstore.

I found their resources tab: Just for Kids amazing, with a link to Reading is Fundamental, a bilingual site "to help latino families read together".

Bilingual Readers is a treasure for those of us with bilingual children.

Bilingual Readers es un sitio encantador con recursos desde libros a información acerca de bilingüismo. Hay libros para niños en Inglés y Español que van más allá de la pequeña selección de libros en Español en la librería del centro.

Su sección Just for Kids, dentro de "recursos" es fantástica y tiene un enlace a Reading is Fundamental, un sitio bilingüe para ayudar a que las familias latinas lean juntos.

Bilingual Readers es un tesoro para aquellos que tenemos niños bilingües.

Raising Multilingual Children

I came across a gem of a book at the local library. The book is Raising Multilingual Children - Foreign Language Acquisition and Children. It answered most of the questions I had regarding the timing for the introduction of a third language into our bilingual household. It also provides a strategy or course of action to implement the new language as well as explanations of how this process takes place in the child's brains.

This read will spark even more questions but I'm hoping to build a reference corner soon in this blog with more resources for multicultural children, their families and community. If you have any link or tittle to recommend, please let me know.

Encontré esta joyita en la biblioteca pública. Este libro se llama Raising Multilingual Children - Foreign Language Acquisition and Children. Respondió la mayoria de las preguntas que tenía acerca del momento correcto para introducir un tercer idioma en nuestra familia bilingue. Además, el libro describe la estrategia o plan para implementar el nuevo idioma junto con la explicación del proceso que se lleva a cabo en la mente de los niños.

Esta lectura va a traer incluso más preguntas pero quiero construir pronto un sitio de referencia en este blog con mas recursos para niños multi culturales, sus familias y la comunidad. Si tienen algun enlace o título para recomendar me dejan saber.

La venganza sera terrible

La venganza será terrible es el show radial que conduce el escritor y músico Alejandro Dolina desde 1983 en Argentina. Yo soy una seguidora fiel (1992) y desde entonces me voy a dormir todas las noches con sus cuentos que escucho online o bajo a mi i pod.

Dolina y sus dos colaboradoes tienen un formato definido y genial. Primero, leen y comentan una parte de historia mundial o de mitología nórdica, china, griega y romana, etc... La segunda parte es netamente humorística basada en "monografías" de las revistas de mujeres que le sirven de plataforma para fraguar pasajes desopilantes. Al cierre, los oyentes pueden llamar con pedidos de canciones para que Dolina y otros músicos interpreten.
Un ejemplo de alguien similar en cuanto al estilo humorístico y nivel cultural en los EEUU sería Garrison Keillor con su programa radial en NPR: A Praire Home Companion.

Revenge will be Terrible is a literal translation of Alejandro Dolina's radio show that he hosts since 1983 in Argentina. I've have been a faithful follower of the show since 1992 and since then I go to sleep with this writer and musician's stories that I listen online or download to my i pod.
Dolina and his team have come up with a fantastic format for the show. First, they read and comment about world history or mythology of all regions of the world. The second part is completely humorous and based on "essays" from women magazines that they use as a platform to concoct the hilarious segment. Just before the end, people can call in song requests f6r Dolina and other musicians.

Garrison Keillor, with his NPR A Praire Home Conmpanion, would be comparable in terms of kind of humor and cultural background in the US.

Ecuador: flores de exportacion

El Ecuador es un paraíso para el cultivo de flores. Su situación geográfica de clima tropical permite el desarrollo del cultivo de excelente calidad de muchas especies tales como claveles, crisantemos, margaritas (flores de verano) pero sobre todo rosas. Dentro de este grupo encontramos más de 100 variedades.

Durante la década de los 80 se inicia el proceso de exportación de flores. Este nuevo modelo de producción de cultivos no tradicionales genera un cambio importante en la economía del país. Las exportaciones de flores durante los primeros años de desarrollo de la industria floricultura se dirigía en un 80% hacia el mercado de Estados Unidos y otros importadores como Canadá, Alemania, Holanda, Italia y Rusia, siendo este último el mercado de mayor auge debido a sus exigencias de calidad.

Los puertos de destino de las exportaciones hacia los Estados Unidos son Miami y Nueva York, siendo Miami la puerta de entrada el resto de estados. Las flores se exportan por carga aérea bajo un cuidadoso control de temperatura.

La temporada más importante para el mercado de flores sigue siendo San Valentín, cuya celebración no solo se da en Estados Unidos, sino también en otros países europeos, aunque en menor escala. Y con la tendencia del crecimiento del mercado Ruso, el Día de la Mujer se ha convertido en la segunda temporada más importante, cuya celebración se da en la mayoría de los países que pertenecieron a la Unión Soviética, seguido del Día de la Madre y Navidad.

Aunque el sector floricultor se ha visto afectado por la crisis económica mundial, la flor ecuatoriana sigue manteniendo su ranking como una de las mejores flores del mundo.

A friend of mine who worked in the Flower Industry for years kindly wrote this for my blog, shedding light on the source of the wonderful roses (and other flowers) available in the US. She has her hands full with the arrival of the new addition to the family this August: Camila. Congratulations and thanks for the article!

Ecuador is heaven for the flower industry. It's geographical location and tropical climate allows for great quality in the development of many species such as carnations, chrysanthemums, daisies, (summer flowers) but especially roses. There are more than 100 varieties in this last group.
The export process of flowers began in the 80s. A new production model generated an important change in the country's economy. At the begining of the development of the flower industry, 80 % of the exports went to the US and other countries such as Canada, Germany, Holand and Italy. Rusia was also a new market and it grew exponentially due to it's quality demand.
Miami and New York are the main destinations of the flowers and Miami is the distribuitor to the the rest of the US market.
The biggest season for flowers is still St Valentines's, which is celebrated not only in th US but also in some European countries to a lesser extent. Thanks to the growth of the Russian market, Women's Day has become the second most important celebration of all countries that used to belong to the Soviet Union. Other important celebrations for the flower industry are Mother's Day and Christmas. Even though the flower grower's market has been affected by the global economic crisis, Ecuatorian flowers are still among the best in the world.
