8 Month Bilingual Baby

Our Baby's linguistic development this month is astounding. As regards production, she seems to be responding with sweet sounds when we play with her. Papa says "ahhh" and waits for her answer and sure enough she goes "ahhh" in response. What is more surprising is to see her understand this is a game!

As regards reception, she seems to understand much more when we talk to her, especially "no, no, no". Also, she is starting to relate to some of her toys more than to others; her face lights up when she sees her little bunny. She has her favorite repertoire of songs to which she gets more excited: El brujo de Gulubú, Manuelita, Estamos invitados a tomar el té, If you are Happy and you Know it, The wheels on the Bus.

Her motor development is ever improving. She learnt to sit up when she is lying down and plays by herself in the pack 'n play and her crib. She's starting to wave bye -bye and attempting kisses. But what I adore the most is that she learnt to clap! Papa taught her one morning in bed and she can't get enough of it - neither can we.

I know it's been said but I'll say it anyway: I feel lucky to have her in my life and humbled by the privilege. I truly do.

...

If you are Happy and you Know it, The wheels on the Bus.

Hot Dogs Colombian Style

OK, I know traditionalists might be put off but there's so much more that can go into a Hot Dog to make it a Perro Caliente!

On Sunday, we took the baby to a celebration for the Colombian Independence Day in Norwalk CT and I had a perfect excuse to try - once again - a Colombian Hot Dog. They were piled up high with pickle relish, green onions, pineapple cubes, bacon bits, ketchup, crumbled chips and no napkins. It was a messy affair but worth the laundry load.

The Wanted

There's a TV show called The Wanted where they capture the whole precess of locating accused criminals to interview them.
There was a preview on NBC news that showed how they hunted and finally got to interview an Iraqi national living in Norway. The show will air in two parts, this Monday and the next at 10-9 Central.
Never a fan of "reality" TV, this show bothers me.
I will try to watch tonight to be fair in my opinion but I'm kind of opposed in principle to trivializing the issue of wanted criminals living among us.

This Family Recipe is a favorite of my brother's. There is matambre in Stamford in La Marqueta. Matambre is a cut of belly meat that runs from the chest to the flank. Since it is tougher than flank steak it needs to be cooked slower and tenderised. In this recipe, the milk does the trick and softens the meat.
1 "matambre"
2 green onions
aluminum paper
oil or cooking spray
salt and pepper
aji (just a little bit)
tarragon (as much as you like - this is the key ingredient)
3/4 liter of milk
Optional: creme fraiche and a bit of diced blue cheese
Place the meat in a baking pan lined with aluminum paper already sprayed with cooking spray or a little oil. Rub the top of the meat with the spices. Add the chopped green onions on top. Pour 1/2 of the milk on top and place in the oven. While it's cooking keep adding milk as it dries out. If you are going to use the cheese of the creme fraiche add it on top of the meat some 7 min before the meat has cooked through.

What are we drinking?

I'm appalled at the article from the NY Times regarding the link between water pollution and deformities in some species. Please read and especially pay attention to the multiple sources of estrogen in our water systems. The big question that this article sparked in me was: What can we do? That is, how can each of us make adjustments in our everyday life to preserve the most precious resource on Earth? One simplified answer would be to pay attention to everything we buy, use and dispose of. We end up drinking everything we produce and discard!

Slowing Down

My daughter has been trying to teach me a lesson that I still don't get. S-l-o-w down, Mom! My times are different to yours (and healthier). Babies have plenty to teach us: they take naps when tired, the eat slowly, they drink plenty of fluids, they play and laugh a lot, they thrive when they are hugged and kissed frequently. Pretty smart, these infants.

...
