It's Time to Talk Day: teen dating abuse
Liz Claiborne It’s Time to Talk Day
You’re a well-informed parent, committed to raising a healthy family. You read food labels, give your kids vitamins. You enforce bedtime, check homework. You’ve had—or are planning to have—conversations with your kids about the dangers of alcohol and tobacco use.
But are you planning to talk to your kids about dating abuse? A recent study by Liz Claiborne Inc. showed that parents are seriously out of touch with the realities of dating violence. The majority of parents surveyed couldn’t identify the warning signs of teen dating abuse. The majority of teens surveyed don’t confide in their parents about their abusive relationships. Sometimes teens themselves don’t know that they’re what they’re experiencing is wrong or where to get help. At a critical stage in their development, teens are taught about the impact of drug abuse, drunk driving, smoking, but they are not taught how to identify and engage in healthy relationships or what to do if a relationship turns abusive.
Isn’t it time to start talking? Liz Claiborne Inc.’s Moms and Dads for Education (MADE) to Stop Teen Dating Abuse is a coalition of parents, teachers and concerned citizens advocating that every high school in the country teach a curriculum on preventing dating relationship violence and abuse. MADE highlights: the power of education, the importance of reaching kids as they are beginning to engage in relationships and the potential for parental involvement to effect prevention.
On Thursday, December 3rd, Liz Claiborne Inc. will host their 6th annual “It’s Time To Talk Day” at their New York City headquarters in partnership with Talk Radio News Service. Celebrities including Mariska Hargitay, Tim Gunn, Malaak Compton-Rock, Ann Shoket, Editor in Chief of Seventeen, and Stacy Morrison, Editor in Chief of Redbook, nationally renowned authors, corporate and government leaders will join with advocates, relationship and adolescent development experts, parents of victims, and teen survivors from across the country to get the conversation started. Leading local and national talk radio hosts will conduct interviews with these participants who are willing to speak-up about domestic violence and teen dating abuse.
“It’s Time To Talk Day” is also an opportunity for Mom Bloggers to help spark a national conversation about the importance of parents taking action and talking to their children about healthy relationships. Anyone can be part of this national day of awareness by joining MADE, www.loveisnotabuse.com/MADE, and by advocating for teen dating abuse education in middle and high schools. Me promeí tiempo para mí luego de un mes lleno de emociones fuertes - desde preocupaciones de salud hasta festejos del 1er cumpleaños. Hasta me es difícil definir que constituye un poco de tiempo para mí cada día. ¿Debería contar la ducha diaria? (todos los 5 minutos). ¿Y leer mientras lavo la ropa cuenta? (serían unos 25 minutos). Pero aprendió al mismo tiempo una sutileza impresionante: a hacer como que llora. Descubrió que cuando llora mamá se materializa a su lado y le resuelve sus inconvenientes. Entonces la investigadora esta experimentando con la hipótesis para probar como funciona en todas las situaciones: cuando no alcanza un juguete, cuando le digo que "no, no, no", cuando quiere el tetero o cuando no lo quiere. Y apenas consigue lo que deseaba, me sonríe encantadora como diciendo "eso era lo que quería, ya podés retirarte".

No podía encontrarlos en mi supermercado hasta que la compañía Cento apareció en mi mercado con su línea de San Marzano. Estos tomates provienen de una región de Italia cerca del Monte Vesubio que es famoso por su exepcional suelo.

Raising Multilingual Children
Encontré esta joyita en la biblioteca pública. Este libro se llama Raising Multilingual Children - Foreign Language Acquisition and Children. Respondió la mayoria de las preguntas que tenía acerca del momento correcto para introducir un tercer idioma en nuestra familia bilingue. Además, el libro describe la estrategia o plan para implementar el nuevo idioma junto con la explicación del proceso que se lleva a cabo en la mente de los niños.

Dolina and his team have come up with a fantastic format for the show. First, they read and comment about world history or mythology of all regions of the world. The second part is completely humorous and based on "essays" from women magazines that they use as a platform to concoct the hilarious segment. Just before the end, people can call in song requests f6r Dolina and other musicians.

A friend of mine who worked in the Flower Industry for years kindly wrote this for my blog, shedding light on the source of the wonderful roses (and other flowers) available in the US. She has her hands full with the arrival of the new addition to the family this August: Camila. Congratulations and thanks for the article!
The export process of flowers began in the 80s. A new production model generated an important change in the country's economy. At the begining of the development of the flower industry, 80 % of the exports went to the US and other countries such as Canada, Germany, Holand and Italy. Rusia was also a new market and it grew exponentially due to it's quality demand.
Miami and New York are the main destinations of the flowers and Miami is the distribuitor to the the rest of the US market.
The biggest season for flowers is still St Valentines's, which is celebrated not only in th US but also in some European countries to a lesser extent. Thanks to the growth of the Russian market, Women's Day has become the second most important celebration of all countries that used to belong to the Soviet Union. Other important celebrations for the flower industry are Mother's Day and Christmas. Even though the flower grower's market has been affected by the global economic crisis, Ecuatorian flowers are still among the best in the world.

9 Months: Bilingual Baby Breakthrough
Nuestra hija responde saludando con su manito cuando decimos Bye, Bye y Chau, Chau así que supongo que asocia ambas palabras (los sonidos) con la misma acción. Esto parece ser el primer indicio de que está incorporando ambos idiomas al mismo tiempo. Seguiremos observando como evoluciona su adquisición del lenguaje.

Ajiaco colombiano
La sopa se espesa por las papas criollas (amarillas y pequeñas) que se deshacen en la cocción.
Se sirve con crema, alcaparras y aguacate además del infaltable arroz blanco como acompañamiento. ¡Una delicia!
¿Y adivinen quién comió su primer Ajiaco el domingo?
This weekend I prepared my first Ajiaco. It is a typical dish of colombian cuisine: a soup with chicken, many kinds of potato, corn and huascas (herb). You can buy the bag with all the ingredients at Grade A superarkets in Stamford.
It's served with creme fraiche, capers, avocado and the ubiquitous white rice on the side. Amazing!
And guess who had her first Ajiaco on Sunday?

Mama
...
My daughter said 'mamamama" and I think of it as her first word. I'm not sure she identifies the concept and sound with me but in an authoritarian whim, given my rank in the family structure, I decree that she did say Mama days before turning 9 months. And whoever has an issue with that can discuss it with my daughter during her hours of operation, every morning at 6 AM, especially Saturdays and Sundays.

Accents: The Spice of Language
We need to broaden our definition of language. Languages belong to the Speakers, to the users of the tool, not only to academics. Theories and accounts of language evolutions and use are all good but the true essence of language resides with Speakers. Language is alive; language changes because humans are still around and we keep changing.
So when students get frustrated with their accents and don't conquer their "difficulties" even after tedious remedial accent reduction classes, I tell them to relax and enjoy what they have and tweak whatever they can in remedial sessions for specific sounds. For some Spanish speakers, the sound /dj/in words like: job, jewel, Jersey, is quite complicated but a relatively easy fix.

Recetas de familia: Matambre a la leche
1 matambre
2 cebollas de verdeo
papel de aluminio
aceite o rocío vegetal
sal y pimienta
ají picante(poquito)
bastante estragón (este es el ingradiente estrella)
3/4 litro de leche
Optativo:1 pote chico de crema de leche y un poquito de queso roqueford en cubitos
Colocar la carne en una asadera sobre el papel aluminio rociado con aceite (poco) o el rocío vegetal, condimentarlo con las especies. Colocarle por encima cebolla de verdeo cortadita en rueditas. Bañar todo con la mitad de la leche y colocar en el horno. Si se va secando ir agregándole más leche hasta su completa cocción. Si se va a utilizar la crema o el queso roqueford, unos 7" antes de que terminada la cocción, agregarle por encima la crema y el queso en pedacitos.

This Family Recipe is a favorite of my brother's. There is matambre in Stamford in La Marqueta. Matambre is a cut of belly meat that runs from the chest to the flank. Since it is tougher than flank steak it needs to be cooked slower and tenderised. In this recipe, the milk does the trick and softens the meat.
1 "matambre"
2 green onions
aluminum paper
oil or cooking spray
salt and pepper
aji (just a little bit)
tarragon (as much as you like - this is the key ingredient)
3/4 liter of milk
Optional: creme fraiche and a bit of diced blue cheese
Place the meat in a baking pan lined with aluminum paper already sprayed with cooking spray or a little oil. Rub the top of the meat with the spices. Add the chopped green onions on top. Pour 1/2 of the milk on top and place in the oven. While it's cooking keep adding milk as it dries out. If you are going to use the cheese of the creme fraiche add it on top of the meat some 7 min before the meat has cooked through.

Mudarse
Mudarse es un gran cambio y los cambios ofrecen oportunidades. Me he mudado varias veces en mi vida pero esta vez es especial porque lo hago con mi familia. La casa que dejamos está llena de recuerdos del hogar que construímos con mi esposo y mi hija y la casa a donde vamos es una nueva aventura que emprendemos juntos.
Lo más abrumador hasta ahora es ver la cantidad de pertenencias que acumulamos y lo poco que realmente importan...

Moving is a big change and changes are opportunities. I've moved many times but this one is special because I'm doing it with my family. The house we are leaving is filled with memories built with my husband and daughter and the one we are moving to is a new adventure we are starting together.
The most overwhelming so far is to see the amount of belongings we accumulate and the little they really matter...

El mate / Yerba Mate
Origen
La yerba mate crece en la región forestal del noreste de Argentina, Paraguay y sur de Brasil. Los indios Guaraníes utilizaban esta hierba como bebida cuando llegaron los españoles a America. Y las misiones Jesuíticas fueron los primeros que lo cultivaron sistemáticamente.
La yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) esta siendo reconocida en los EEUU en los círculos "naturales". Algunas cadenas de supermercados, como Whole Foods, importan dos marcas de Yerba mate - Guayaki (organica, cultivada a la sombra) y Eco. Aunque estoy desacostumbrada a tomar mate desde hace unos años, de vez en cuando preparo unos a la tarde mientras ordeno la casa y preparo la cena.
En cuanto a los efectos, en mi caso, el mate me da un pequeno "acelere" que dura unas horas. Algunos expertos (pero no todos están de acuerdo) dicen que eso se debe a una sustancia parecida a la cafeína pero no tan nociva para el cuerpo. Además, aseguran que contiene varias vitaminas, minerales, antioxidantes y aminoácidos.
El mate es un habito al que hay que darle tiempo para acostumbrar el paladar. Ojala lo prueben algun dia.

Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is becoming known in the US in the natural circles. Some supermarket chains like Whole Foods import two brands of mate - Guayaki (organic, shade grown) and Eco. Although I lost the habit of drinking mate a few years ago, once and again I drink a couple while I straighten out the house or cook dinner. Many of the most popular brands form South America are available in the Hispanic markets in Stamford CT, in Queens, NY and in New Jersey (tri state area) and also online (everything is online!).
In my experience, drinking mate gives me a mild to high buzz. Some experts (not all) say that this buzz is due to a substance similar to caffeine but not as harmful. They also say that the beverage contains vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids.
Each region and family has their preferences when it comes to preparing mate. My Grandfather made them sweet with sugar and dried orange peel (No sugar in mine). I recently began to add unorthodox herbs such as Echinacea in the winter.
Mate is an acquired taste and I hope you try it someday.
